A Sandbox Playground That Has Everything — Except a Price Tag

Our twins are serious about sandbox time. We're talking the kind of dedication that once drove us all the way to Gangneung at 18 months, armed with a brand-new sand toy set and a determination to get this right. So when we discovered a proper sandbox playground just a short subway ride away — completely free, with 365-day shade — it felt like the universe finally understood us.

Located under an elevated highway along Cheonggyecheon Stream in Seongdong-gu, this spot doesn't always come up easily in searches. But Google Maps does find it, and once you know it's there, you'll want to come back every weekend.

The Highway Above Is Actually the Best Thing About This Place

I'll be honest — when I first saw photos of a playground under a concrete overpass, my instinct was "dark, gloomy, probably smells weird." I was completely wrong. The overpass acts as a massive natural roof: direct sunlight blocked at every angle, open on all sides for cross-ventilation, and breezy even on the hottest Seoul summer days.

We visited in mid-May and it was noticeably cooler under there than the surrounding streets. No shade-hunting, no burning stroller handles, no reapplying sunscreen every 20 minutes. For parents, this alone is worth the trip.

Light rain? No problem. The overpass handles that too. You'd only need to skip it in typhoon-level weather.

Standing in the middle of a sunny Seoul afternoon, completely in the shade, watching our twins dig happily — that's what a summer parenting win feels like.

Sandbox + Zipline + Swings + Trampolines — All in One Spot

The sandbox is the star of the show, but this is genuinely a full-kit playground. Here's what you'll find packed under the overpass:

🛝 Full Facilities List Sandbox · Zipline (under 13 only) · Swings (under 13 only) · Trampolines · Futsal court · Basketball hoop · Water fountain right next to the sandbox

Our twins did the classic loop: swings → sprint to sandbox → back to swings. We were there for well over two hours before they were ready to leave. The age restrictions on ziplines and swings (13 and under) mean this stays genuinely kid-focused, which we appreciate.

The Water Fountain Is Ten Steps from the Sandbox — This Matters More Than You Think

If you've ever done sandbox time at a playground where the water source is a five-minute walk away, you know the pain. Sand-plus-water is basically a toddler's definition of heaven, but that happiness disappears fast when the parent has to keep sprinting back and forth with a cup.

Here, the water fountain is right next to the sandbox. Our son picked up his own cup, waddled over, filled it up, and poured it into his sand mold — completely independently. That was the first time I actually got to sit down and rest during a sandbox session.

With sand and water both in play, expect a minimum two-hour visit. Pack a change of clothes.

The Swing Area Is Bigger Than Expected

The swings run under the full length of the overpass and there are quite a few of them — even on a busy weekend afternoon we didn't have to wait long. Our daughter made a beeline for the swings first, then transitioned directly to the sandbox without any negotiation required.

What We Loved, What Could Be Better

This is one of our most-returned-to playgrounds in Seoul, so the positives clearly outweigh the negatives. But in the spirit of keeping it real:

✅ What Works Perfect shade in all weather · Free admission · Water access right by the sandbox · Full range of equipment for different ages · Well-maintained · Manageable crowds even on weekends
⚠️ One Thing to Note The slides are sized for very young toddlers — our 38-month-old twins barely squeezed any use out of them. If slide action is a priority for your older preschooler, this might be a mild disappointment. Everything else compensates for it, though.
🚗 No Parking Available This playground is only accessible by public transit. Take Line 5 to Yongdap Station (Exit 2) and cross the bridge — it's a 2-minute walk. Plan accordingly.

Common Questions

Q. How do I find this playground — is it easy to locate?
Yes, it's very straightforward. Take Line 5 to Yongdap Station, use Exit 2, and cross one bridge — the playground appears directly underneath the elevated highway. Google Maps finds it, so you can navigate there without any trouble.
Q. Do I need to bring sand toys?
Highly recommended. A basic set — cup, shovel, and a few molds — will keep toddlers busy for two-plus hours. Since there's a water fountain steps away, anything water-play friendly is a bonus. Extra clothes are a must.
Q. Can we visit on a rainy day?
Light rain, absolutely yes. The overpass provides full roof coverage so a gentle shower won't interrupt play at all. Skip it during heavy storms or lightning.
Q. What age is this playground best for?
From about 12 months (once walking) through early elementary age. It's especially ideal for preschoolers — the sandbox, zipline, swings, and trampolines all have under-13 restrictions that keep the space genuinely child-friendly. The slides skew toward younger toddlers.
Q. How hot does it get here in summer?
Much cooler than a typical outdoor playground. The overpass blocks all direct sunlight and the open sides allow steady airflow — it feels meaningfully cooler than the surrounding streets even on the hottest days. Sunscreen is optional here (though always a good habit).
Q. Is there parking nearby?
There is no dedicated parking for this playground, and street parking in the area is very limited. We strongly recommend coming by subway — Line 5 Yongdap Station Exit 2, then two minutes on foot across the bridge.
