Masian Tidal Flat: No Reservation, Perfect for Kids — We Went on Children's Day

By Leevo·Twin Trails·Day Trip from Seoul

No plans, no reservations — just a spontaneous holiday trip with our twins, my husband, and both grandparents. Six people, one tidal flat, and more seagulls than we could count. Masian Tidal Flat Experience Center on Yeongjong Island ended up being the highlight of our entire Children's Day weekend.

Masian tidal flat packed with families during Children's Day holiday

🌊 Children's Day weekend — the tidal flat was packed in every direction

We Went on Children's Day — and It Showed

We checked out of our accommodation at 10am and arrived in under 10 minutes. What greeted us was an absolutely packed tidal flat — a real holiday crowd scene.

Equipment rental sold out fast. By the time we arrived, only one rake was left. We ended up exploring the tidal flat in Crocs — and the kids loved it anyway.

💡 Important: During peak seasons and holidays, rental equipment (boots, sleds, rakes) sells out quickly. Bring your own gear if you're visiting on a busy day.

Firm Sand, Not Thick Mud — Great for Little Ones

One of the biggest surprises: Masian's tidal flat is firm and sandy, not the deep sinking mud you might expect. The kids ran around freely without any trouble, and first-timers had nothing to worry about.

The seagulls were everywhere — like pigeons in a city park. Our twins spent the whole drive home imitating their calls.

Want More Clams? Take the Tidal Flat Cart 🚜

We came in with big dreams of clam soup for dinner. An hour later, we had caught fewer than 10 and released them all back. Meanwhile, we watched other families filling entire sleds.

The secret, as told to us by a local guide on site: take the tidal flat cart deeper into the flat. The area near the entrance has been picked over — the further out you go, the better the haul.

💡 Cart info: Cash payment only on-site, no advance booking. Two carts alternate so the line moves faster than it looks. Fun fact: the price going in and coming back out is different!

Packing List — Learned the Hard Way

✅ Must-Haves

  • Light jacket — sea breeze is colder than you expect, especially with wet clothes
  • Towel — makes a huge difference for the drive home
  • 2-liter water bottle — the wash station is far from the parking lot. Rinse the kids off right at the car
  • Rain boots — available to rent, but sell out fast on busy days
  • Gloves, hat, sled/rake — same as above, bring your own to be safe
💡 Note: There is a wash station on-site for hands and feet, but no shower facilities. Plan accordingly.

FAQ

Q. Do I need a reservation?
No reservation needed — it's walk-in only. Just show up, pay at the entrance, and you're in. Check Naver Place for that day's experience hours before you go.
Q. How much does it cost?
Adults ₩10,000 / Children (7–13) ₩5,000 / Under 7 ₩3,000. There's also a ₩10,000 deposit per person, refunded when you return your safety vest. Parking is free for 6 hours.
Q. What should I pack?
The three essentials: a light jacket, a towel, and a 2-liter water bottle for rinsing kids off at the car. Boots and rakes are available to rent, but sell out fast on holidays.
Q. Is it okay for toddlers?
Absolutely. Unlike deep mudflats, Masian's tidal flat is firm and sandy — toddlers can run around without sinking. It's one of the most toddler-friendly tidal flat experiences near Seoul.
Q. How do we catch more clams?
Take the tidal flat cart! The area near the entrance gets picked over quickly. Riding the cart deeper into the flat is where the real clam hunting happens — recommended by the on-site guides themselves.
Q. Is parking free?
Yes — 6 hours free with tidal flat admission. The parking area is spacious.
★★★★☆

Final Verdict: A Spontaneous Win

We didn't catch much. We didn't have boots. But the kids chased seagulls, dug in the sand, and talked about it the whole drive home. That's enough.
